What is Cognitive Retraining? How can it help?
The goal of cognitive retraining, also known as cognitive rehabilitation, is to help individuals with acquired brain injuries progress to the most independent level of functioning possible.
Cognitive Retraining contains two essential processes:
1) Restoration of cognitive functions that can be restored or improved
2) Learning how to do things differently by acquiring compensation strategies when functions cannot be restored to pre-injury levels
As a result of a brain injury, survivors can experience a variety of cognitive challenges, such as difficulties with neurofatigue, initiation, emotional control, attention, memory, information processing speed and executive functions such as time management, organization, planning and self monitoring. These challenges can significantly effect an individual's level of functioning and independence, as well as their ability to return to work or school.
Families soon discover that cognitive rehabilitation from a brain injury is typically a long-term process and that post-acute resources and services from medical providers is limited and insufficient. The continuum of care suddenly stops and survivors and their loved ones, are left to navigate this undefined journey on their own.
Brain Injury Rehab OC/LA starts where the medical model drops off. Daily functioning can improve indefinitely with effort and compensatory training. We have worked with thousands of individuals, helping them rebuild their lives and return to the community after a brain injury.
